Environmental Allergy Testing

Environmental allergy testing identifies allergens, like mold, pet dander, trees, weeds and common food items that can cause allergies. During a skin prick test, a healthcare provider introduces allergens into your skin to check for a wheal (raised mark), rash or other reactions. A skin test can be a fast and affordable way for an allergist or immunologist to diagnose the source of your environmental allergies to help develop your individualized treatment plan.

Food Allergy Testing

If you have suspicion that you are allergic to a food item, you may be interested in our food allergy testing. We test for 70 allergens in our food panel and depending on your case history, you may be tested for one food or several. We are able to determine your food allergy in 15 minutes of applying the skin prick test.

Skin Patch Test

Patch testing is generally done to see whether a particular substance is causing allergic skin inflammation (contact dermatitis). Patch tests can detect delayed allergic reactions, which can take several days to develop. Patch tests don't use needles. Instead, allergens are applied to patches, which are then placed on your skin. During a patch test, your skin may be exposed to several extracts of substances that can cause contact dermatitis. These can include latex, metals, fragrances, preservatives, hair dyes, and clothing.

Asthma Action Plan

Everyone with asthma needs his or her own Asthma Action Plan. Our providers help create a plan that works best for you or your child. Our goal is to prevent and control asthma attacks. Some schools require this form.

Drug Challenge

Skin and blood tests are not available for all drugs. Sometimes the doctor will suggest performing a drug challenge test. This may be done to ascertain that the patient is allergic and must avoid the drug, or to asses if the drug is tolerated and the patient can receive it. Sometimes it is used to assess tolerance to an alternative drug The patient is administered small doses of the drug, which are gradually increased until a normal dose is given. The drug is administered orally, inhaled or injected. The patient is watched for several hours. Speak with our providers to see if you are a good candidate for this type of testing.

Immunotherapy

Allergy shots work like a vaccine. Your body responds to injected amounts of a particular allergen, given in gradually increasing doses, by developing immunity or tolerance to the allergen. Allergy shots are a form of long-term treatment that decreases symptoms for many people with allergic rhinitis, allergic asthma, conjunctivitis (eye allergy) or stinging insect allergy. You may notice a decrease in symptoms during the build-up phase, but it may take as long as 12 months on the maintenance dose to notice an improvement. If allergy shots are successful, maintenance treatment is generally continued for three to five years. Any decision to start or stop allergy shots should be discussed with our allergist / immunologist.

Eczema

We provide long-term treatment solutions for eczema and chronic urticaria. Symptoms of atopic dermatitis (eczema) include:

• Patches of skin that are red or brownish.

• Itchy skin, especially at night

• Dry cracked or scaly skin

Biologics

Biologics have been major breakthroughs for many patients with chronic allergic disorders and uncontrolled chronic asthma that is not controlled with prescription therapies.

If your asthma, eczema and/or chronic sinus disease with nasal polyps is not well controlled, ask your board-certified allergist if you are a candidate for a biologic.
